Images of the USS Massachusetts, known as the  Mamie are shown below.  The ship is permanently moored at Battleship Cove in Fall River Massachusetts with the single exception of the only trip the boat has undertaken in the last 35 years or so.  The below photos were taken on the Mamie's return trip from the Boston Naval Shipyard after a long needed refit in March of 1999.  I  took these shots from Portsmouth, RI with my Nikon N-60 using a standard 28-70 mm lens just as the great vessel approached the Mount Hope Bridge.  The four ocean tugs worked diligently and sometimes with great effort to avoid the shoals of Portsmouth and the concrete piers of the suspension bridge's towers.  The two photos below were scanned on a Minolta Dual Scan negative scanner using Vuescan software at maximum 2800 dpi and rescaled down to 1600 and 800 dpi respectively using PhotoShop.

If you know of someone who served on the USS Massachusetts and would like to relate his experience to others, I would like very much to publish the account.  Email  Nick Murgo.
